Halitosis is a very common condition, affecting about 30% of the population. Bad odor is caused by the breakdown of bacteria that accumulate in the oral cavity (on the tongue, teeth, cheeks and interdental spaces).
Causes of bad breath include: poor oral hygiene, gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), tooth decay or diet and lifestyle (food, smoking and alcohol).
However, by far the most common cause is incorrect or insufficient oral hygiene. The use of a toothbrush alone does not guarantee satisfactory results and should be combined with a more comprehensive oral hygiene.
TIP
In most cases, to prevent and treat bad breath, it is sufficient to adopt good oral hygiene practices at home. It is advisable to proceed daily as follows:
- Interdental cleaning: at least once a day
- Brushing: 3 times a day for 2 minutes
- Mouthwashfor daily treatment: 2-3 times a day
- Tongue cleaning: after every toothbrush session
Above all, the tongue is the site of a buildup of bacteria, so pay special attention to it.
